Potomac in Bloom Channel 4 came to the gardens of Rachel and Ed on Sunday June 8 to publicize Buffalo in Bloom and their quest to sign up volunteer garden scouts. Sally Cunningham, garden expert, was accompanied by Peter Theilman and Sheila Murphy, the Buffalo in Bloom volunteers who did a presentation at our May Block Blub meeting. (Sheila Murphy, you may remember, was the first full time female news anchor on Channel 2.) As a result of that meeting, at least six Block Club members volunteered to be "garden scouts" for Buffalo in Bloom. Buffalo in Bloom's mission is to promote gardening throughout the City of Buffalo all summer long by recognizing and celebrating the efforts of city residents, businesses and institutions that beautify their streetscape with gardens that can be enjoyed by everyone who walks or rides on our city streets. Buffalo in Bloom and Channel 4 thought that showing off the efforts of Rachel and Ed would make a perfect kick off for their mission. Scouts walk every block of the city and place a Buffalo in Bloom flag in gardens that they recognize. They also photograph the garden (and the gardeners, if they're willing) and post the photos on their web site. Several of our Potomac gardens were "bloomed" last year and the gardeners also received discounts from nurseries and a certificate from the mayor. If you want a birdhouse that looks like your house, as you see in Ed's garden, click here.
